Exam Syllabus

 
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India. It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for various civil services and administrative positions in the Indian government. The CSE consists of three stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Personality Test (Interview). Below is an overview of the syllabus for each stage:
1. Preliminary Examination:
The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UPSC CSE and consists of two compulsory papers:
a. General Studies Paper-I: This paper tests candidates' knowledge in the following areas: - Current events of national and international importance - History of India and Indian National Movement - Indian and World Geography - Indian Polity and Governance - Economic and Social Development - Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change - General Science
b. General Studies Paper-II (CSAT - Civil Services Aptitude Test): This paper evaluates candidates' comprehension, analytical, and decision-making abilities. It includes: - Comprehension - Interpersonal skills, including communication skills - Logical reasoning and analytical ability - Decision-making and problem-solving - General mental ability - Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) - Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc.)
2. Main Examination:
The Main Examination is the second stage of the UPSC CSE and consists of nine papers. Out of these, seven are qualifying papers, and the remaining two papers (Essay and General Studies) are counted for ranking.
a. Qualifying Papers: - Paper-A: Indian Language (Qualifying nature) - Paper-B: English (Qualifying nature)
b. Essay Paper: - Candidates have to write two essays, choosing one from each section out of four given topics.
c. General Studies Papers: - Paper-I: Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society - Paper-II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations - Paper-III: Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management - Paper-IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
d. Optional Subject Papers (Two papers): - Candidates can choose one optional subject from a list of subjects provided by UPSC. Each subject has two papers.
3. Personality Test (Interview):
Candidates who qualify for the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test (Interview). This stage assesses the candidate's personality, communication skills, and suitability for a career in the civil services.
